SFTP Server (AWS Transfer Family)

Component description

The AWS Transfer Family provides fully managed support for file transfers directly to and from Amazon S3. This is especially useful when large amounts of data need to be exchanged flexibly and cost-effectively, as S3 has extremely low storage costs.

Specifically, we provide an SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol is the SSH version of the well known old FTP) endpoint with a connected S3 bucket(s). The SFTP users can be granted fine-grained permissions for folders in the buckets. For security reasons, authentication is done exclusively via SSH key.

Common use cases

SFTP Server (AWS Transfer Family) can be used to upload files to a S3 Bucket via SFTP protocol. With FTPS, the FTP connection is encrypted with SSL/TLS, and with FTP it is not encrypted at all. Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a file protocol for transferring large files. It combines the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) with the security of the Secure Shell (SSH). SSH is a cryptographic network protocol. This can be utilized for attaching legacy systems to cloud native infrastructure. A good example is a Product information management system (PIM) that stores all you product information like product images. Those images should be included in your shop and published via Cloudfront which uses a S3 bucket as backend. As this provides fast delivery and affordable storage pricing. A lot of those PIM systems only support transfer via SFTP. So here AWS Transfer Family for SFTP can be used.
